Cudeman 288-C Rayon: the compact skinner that reaches the impossible corners
Launched in 2008, this hunting knife earned its nickname "Rayon" in 2025 following a vote among more than 20,000 Instagram followers; as a fun fact, the person who suggested the winning name received the first unit marked as such free of charge. Made by Cudeman in its Albacete workshops, it is a short-bladed model conceived for one very specific task: skinning and cleaning the harvested game. Its trimmed silhouette and ergonomic profile deliver nimble handling out in the field, almost like an extension of the fingers, allowing you to work the tightest areas without damaging the tissue or spoiling the trophy.
Taking the Cudeman Rayon in hand conveys the heritage of classic knifemaking and the hunting spirit of antler scales, combined with the technical reliability a skilled hunter demands to carry out field dressing with precision and respect.
Features that make the difference
- Wide blade for continuous cuts: the 4 cm blade width and the skinning tip are designed to trace curved, flowing strokes across the trophy, reducing the risk of punctures.
- Firm thumb support: the jimping or ratchet pattern on the spine creates a non-slip point that channels the force of the hand toward the edge with great directional control.
- Safety bolster: the polished A-304 stainless steel front bolster acts as a stop, preventing the fingers from sliding toward the blade even with soiled hands.
- Lightweight for long days: at 16.5 cm overall length and around 200 grams in weight, it eases the strain on the wrist during prolonged processing of the carcass.
Steel and edge performance
The blade is forged in molybdenum-vanadium steel, tempered to a hardness of 54/56 HRc. This alloy is especially well suited to hunting because it stands up well to the abrasion of constant rubbing against the animal's hair and hide. The satin finish promotes smooth gliding, and its ease of sharpening lets you bring the edge back in the field with a few passes of a honing steel.
Construction and durability
Despite its contained size, this is a full tang piece: the 3.8 mm of steel thickness run from end to end through the knife, forming a solid core that balances the whole in the palm. As a pure skinner, all of its strength is geared toward cutting and skinning. To preserve its structure, it should not be used as a pry bar or as a machete on bone or wood; it was born to cut superbly, not for those uses.
Handle and grip
The grip is fitted with scales of genuine polished stag antler, a material of great natural beauty that brings warmth and presence to your kit. They are permanently secured with peened aluminium rivets and mould to the hand, offering an organic, non-slip texture and a sensitivity that proves very useful for guiding the tool blind inside the carcass.
Sheath and carry
The Cudeman Rayon comes protected by a brown leather sheath crafted by saddlers to fit the wide silhouette of the knife. Its compact format, at barely 50 grams, makes for a comfortable and discreet belt carry, ideal for moving quietly through the brush and keeping it always at hand.
Use cases
- Full skinning: the wide profile skins quickly and cleanly, keeping the hide intact.
- Trophy cleaning: it easily reaches the narrow areas of the skull or jaw, true to its reputation for getting where others cannot.
- Detail work: it pairs with a larger finishing knife, handling the fine cuts and separating small joints.
Care and maintenance
- Rinse the blade as soon as you finish field dressing so that blood and fluids do not adhere or rust the molybdenum-vanadium steel.
- Dry it thoroughly, with particular care at the joint with the bolster, before storing it in the sheath.
- As these are natural polished stag antler scales, keep them in a dry place; avoid wetting them and do not apply oils or waxes so as not to alter their colour and texture.
- Apply a thin coat of lubricating oil to the blade if you are going to store the kit until the next season.
- Clean the lanyard hole dry with a small brush to remove any soil or grease residue.
The Cudeman Rayon (288-C) is more than a knife: a skinner designed for the intense work of big-game hunting. Available at Navajeria with shipping across mainland Spain.
