Cudeman FAB (298-M): the survival classic now dressed in black Micarta
Rough country shows no mercy and demands tools that can take mud, fluids and relentless punishment without giving an inch. The Cudeman FAB (298-M) was conceived precisely as a tactical, rugged answer to that challenge. The lineage began in 2010 with the legendary FAB I, developed alongside the enthusiasts of the Foro de Armas Blancas and first introduced with white Micarta scales. The next stage of its evolution called for a companion built to get dirty without hesitation, and that is how this dark-toned version came about: black was chosen for how easy it is to clean and maintain out in the field, finished off with striking red spacers.
The generational leap is not limited to the materials; it also reaches the geometry. The old curved machining gave way to a flat grind that is more modern, more biting and especially effective when working wood. Made piece by piece by Cudeman in Albacete, this knife is positioned as an ally for those who feel at home in the backcountry and refuse to compromise on uncompromising performance.
What makes it the right fit for you
- Resistance to the elements: the dark synthetic handle hides signs of use, sheds dirt and keeps performing consistently no matter how grimy it gets.
- Refined cutting and penetration: the new flat-grind profile speeds up demanding work on wood, lowers friction and makes resharpening simpler.
- Striking capability: the solid pommel striker at the rear adds extra uses around camp, letting you pound or crush without putting the main edge at risk.
Steel and edge behaviour
The heart of this piece is the formidable Bohler N-695 steel, given a heat treatment that brings it to a hardness of 59/60 HRc. It is a high-end alloy that offers outstanding edge retention through long days of chopping or shelter building. Its satin finish, combined with the flat-grind profile, slices through material with notable ease. On top of that it provides good defence against corrosion, although that same high hardness makes it advisable to reach for quality diamond or ceramic stones to bring back its original bite.
Construction and durability
Reliability in the field comes from a seamless structure. This is a fully full-tang knife: a 5-millimetre-thick steel plate with a 3.5-centimetre blade width runs through the tool from the tip to the pommel. Its 270 grams are joined together with precision by thick stainless steel Allen screws and internal brass-threaded bushings. It is a block built to absorb abuse, though it pays to respect its survival logic: the drop-point tip is designed to cut and pierce, not to pry against granite rocks.
Handle and control in real use
When fatigue sets in, the grip makes all the difference. The scales are machined from industrial-grade black satin Micarta, a material that neither swells nor rots and that delivers a firm hold even with hands wet from rain or sweat. To reinforce safety when applying force in one direction, the spine features a pronounced jimping that locks the thumb firmly in place. The set is rounded off with a lanyard hole located in the pommel striker, securing retention during demanding manoeuvres.
Sheath and carry
The carry system on this model has been refined over time. The basic sheath of the earliest versions was left behind to make way for a black leather multi-position sheath, with sturdy loops and snaps. True to the brand's craft tradition, this piece is made in-house by Cudeman, cut and assembled by its own artisans. The model is offered in two configurations:
- 298-M: black leather multi-position sheath, plain and ready to go straight onto the belt either vertically or horizontally.
- 298-MC: the complete set, with a black leather multi-position sheath that adds a front adapter holding a sharpening stone, signal mirror, fire steel and red 550 paracord, forming a full survival kit.
Where it shines
- Intensive bushcraft, with extended cutting sessions to process firewood or gather tinder.
- Tactical survival and rescue, making the most of its resistance to the elements and its impact capability.
- Quick set-up of camps and shelters in very wet or muddy environments.
Care and maintenance
- Clean the blade with soap and water to remove sap or mud, and thoroughly dry the Bohler N-695 steel before storing it in the sheath.
- The Micarta scales are synthetic and very stable against moisture; they need no conditioning, a quick brushing is enough to restore their look.
- Check the tightness of the Allen screws from time to time if you subject the knife to heavy impacts while cutting wood.
- Keep the jimping on the spine free of caked-in dirt so the thumb does not slip when pressing down.
- At the end of the season, take the knife out of the leather sheath to prevent condensation during prolonged storage.
