Description

Cudeman 179-B: small satin throwing knife for precision sport throwing

In short-range throwing, where the throwing sequences chain together quick rotations, the thrower needs a piece that reacts nimbly in the air. The 179-B by Cudeman is a compact sport projectile designed for those after fast cadences without losing control. It measures just 15 cm in overall length, a size that lets you balance it on your fingertips and fine-tune the moment of release down to the millimetre.

Far from being a drawback, its compact size demands an even more refined design within sport ballistics. With a base weight of only 50 grams, it eases the strain on your shoulder throughout long practice sessions, while its adjustable weight system puts the physics of the flight in the user's hands: simply tune the blade's rotation to your own technique, whether you are a beginner or a seasoned thrower.

What sets it apart

  • Adjustable centre of gravity: it carries a dual counterweight that shifts forward or back to vary its in-flight behaviour according to the distance to the target.
  • Setup in seconds: the included Allen key lets you reposition the weight distribution without breaking your focus on the throwing range.
  • Low-fatigue practice: its 50-gram base weight makes it ideal for stringing together hundreds of repetitions without punishing your arm joints.
  • Clean release: the smooth profile, with no textures that create friction, lets the steel leave your fingers in a straight, predictable line.

Steel and point behaviour

The constant striking against wooden blocks calls for well-considered metallurgy. This piece uses 420 steel with a heat treatment that gives it a hardness of 52/53 HRc, a value that prioritises toughness: under a hard impact, the blade flexes microscopically and dissipates the energy of the strike rather than chipping. The profile's grind and the satin finish end in a very pronounced throwing point, able to part the fibres of the target and stick firmly to minimise dangerous bounce-backs. It is worth clarifying that, despite its pronounced point, this tool has no edge.

Construction and durability

The strength of the 179-B comes from a single-piece construction, one uninterrupted piece of steel. Its 2.8 mm thickness and 2.5 cm blade width provide just the right rigidity to absorb the violent deceleration of the strike. As an instrument conceived exclusively for ballistics and sport throwing into soft wood, it should not be used for camp cutting tasks, chopping or prying; respecting that use guarantees its aerodynamic geometry stays intact over the years.

Handle and grip

The handle is a continuous extension of the steel itself, bare and without scales. By not incorporating add-on parts liable to break in accidental collisions between knives, the grip area is practically indestructible. It is in this central body that the dual counterweight system operates, so the thrower can hold the piece either in a pinch grip on the blade or by the handle, transferring the inertia evenly on release.

Sheath and carry

Carrying the gear safely is essential. The set comes with a 35-gram black leather sheath, cut and stitched in the leatherworking workshops of Cudeman in Albacete. Its made-to-measure cut wraps the piece to prevent punctures inside your backpack or kit, and it features a belt loop that keeps the tool within reach during throwing rounds. An Allen key is also included to adjust the front weight according to each thrower's throwing style.

Use cases

  • Short distances: its compact format makes it unbeatable for calculating quick rotations and mastering throws just a few metres from the target.
  • Beginners and high tempo: the low weight helps novice and advanced throwers maintain a steady cadence without wearing themselves out.
  • Instinctive throwing: its compact shape favours no-spin styles, with fine control from the point.

Care and maintenance

  • Check the counterweight screws with the Allen key from time to time: the vibration of the impacts in wood tends to loosen the anchors with use.
  • Inspect the edges of the steel after practice; if an impact in the air left a nick, smooth it with a fine file so you don't scratch your fingers when throwing.
  • Clean any resin or plant fibre residue from the satin blade with a dry cloth, so the surface keeps an optimal glide.
  • Apply a drop of mineral oil before storing the gear out of season to protect the pores of the 420 steel.
  • Keep the black leather sheath away from moisture and heat sources, preventing the stitching or natural leather from deteriorating.

The small Cudeman 179-B throwing knife is a reminder that precision depends on calculation and balance rather than size: a sport piece designed to respond to your reflexes and stick with authority throw after throw. Available at Navajeria with shipping across mainland Spain.
