Description

Cudeman 288-L Rayon: the compact skinner in olive wood

The 288-L, known as the Cudeman Rayon, owes its name to a vote cast by thousands of enthusiasts on social media. It is a pure skinning knife made by Cudeman in Albacete, designed to reach those anatomical spots where larger blades lose their effectiveness. Its compact format, combined with the nobility of the wood, turns it into an extension of the hand during dressing and encourages clean, meticulous work on the carcass.

When cleaning the trophy, a tool offering millimetre control is essential, one that neither damages the meat nor accidentally pierces the hide. This piece brings together the technical firmness of a broad geometry with the comfort of an organic grip, providing the confidence to handle the most delicate moments of the hunt with skill.

Why it suits the hunter

  • Continuous, precise cuts: the broad 4 cm blade and the skinning point help separate the hide with ease, reducing the risk of damaging the meat or internal organs.
  • Secure traction and support: the jimping along the spine, like a ratchet, offers a thumb anchor point that transmits the full power of the hand to the edge with precision.
  • Front safety stop: the curved satin-finished A-304 stainless steel bolster acts as a structural brake and protects the fingers against possible slips during the task.
  • Manoeuvring in tight spaces: at 16.5 cm in total length and barely 200 grams, it prevents wrist fatigue and allows uninterrupted work in the narrowest angles.

Steel and edge performance

The blade is forged in molybdenum vanadium steel, with a fine-tuned heat treatment that brings it to a hardness of 54/56 HRc. That balance is key in the field: it keeps a tenacious edge against hair and the abrasion of the hide, yet lets you restore the cut quickly with a conventional honing steel out in the bush. The satin finish, besides looking good, helps the blade glide smoothly across the tissues.

Construction and durability

Despite its modest dimensions, the model features a robust full tang structure. The 3.8 mm of steel thickness runs through the tool from the tip to the pommel, forming a solid block capable of withstanding the strain of prolonged cutting. As a piece specialised in skinning and precision cutting, its durability and the good condition of the grind depend on using it for its intended purpose, without prying against bone or wood.

Handle and control during work

The handle is crafted from natural satin-finished olive wood, a Mediterranean timber that offers a unique grain along with a warm and highly ergonomic feel. The scales are secured with flat aluminium rivets set flush with the surface, so that annoying chafing is avoided and a firm grip is guaranteed even with hands that are wet or soiled from the work.

Sheath and portability

To protect its broad blade, the 288-L comes with a brown leather sheath made in-house by Cudeman, cut and stitched to measure in their workshops. Its design reduces bulk and fits precisely to the silhouette of the knife. At just 50 grams, it allows comfortable, completely silent belt carry, ideal for moving across the hunting ground without giving away your presence to the wildlife.

Use scenarios

  • Primary skinning: the blade morphology makes it easy to separate the hide from the carcass quickly and without tugging.
  • Precision dressing: its compact size gives access to narrow joints and lets you prepare the trophy with a fine touch.
  • Support during butchering: it acts as a companion to a larger finishing knife, taking on the tasks that demand the greatest manual skill.

Care and maintenance

  • It is best to rinse the tool with fresh water as soon as the dressing is finished, to prevent blood and organic residue from attacking the molybdenum vanadium steel.
  • Thoroughly dry the blade and the area around the satin-finished bolster before returning the piece to its sheath.
  • As the handle is natural olive wood, it is advisable to nourish the scales now and then with a few drops of linseed or mineral oil to keep them hydrated and bring out the grain.
  • Check that the lanyard pin hole stays free of dirt, using a soft-bristled brush to help.
  • For long periods of disuse, it is best to store the knife outside the leather sheath and apply a thin layer of protective oil to the metal.

The Cudeman Rayon (288-L) combines the experience of the seasoned hunter with the lasting nobility of olive wood: a tool conceived to master butchering and honour every moment in the field. Available at Navajeria with shipping across mainland Spain.
