Cudeman Kaiman 183-JV: the first Cudeman in green Juma, a collector's gem
Few pieces capture the boldest side of Cudeman as well as the Kaiman. Born from a collaboration with Charles, of Opus Knives, it was first unveiled at the 2020 Ibercut Fair and, after every detail had been fine-tuned, went on sale roughly four years later. Today it stands alongside the Pyrana model at the head of the brand's most daring line. More than a simple tool, it is a design statement for anyone after something truly different.
The detail that makes it historic: it marked the debut of Juma in the Cudeman catalogue. Here it appears in a deep green whose pattern recalls the scaly skin of a reptile, hence its name. This is a full-tang knife, perfectly capable of real work, although its ideal home is the display cabinet of a collector of singular pieces.
Key features
- A brand milestone: the first Cudeman knife with Juma scales, a synthetic with a one-of-a-kind pattern and tremendous durability.
- Designer signature: with Opus Knives behind it, it boasts a carefully shaped handle and a flowing profile where cutting performance and aesthetics go hand in hand.
- Sure thumb grip: the spine features jimping that helps you rest your thumb and confidently control its 5 mm thickness.
- A matching set: it comes with a black leather sheath finished with green stitching, in keeping with the handle colour.
The steel and its cut
It carries a Bohler N-695 blade, a high-end steel taken to 59/60 HRc that holds its edge for a long time and easily resists corrosion, keeping its satin finish intact. With a 16 cm blade and a flat grind, it cuts with a smoothness that is surprising for a piece also meant to be displayed.
Build and durability
Its 5 mm spine and one-piece construction make the Kaiman a practically unbreakable knife. The scales are secured with flat aluminium rivets that leave a clean finish, and the black spacers play off the green of the Juma. The blade ends in a drop-point tip, which adds strength to handle demanding tasks without flinching. Overall it measures 28 cm.
The handle
Beyond turning heads, the green Juma handle offers a firm, comfortable grip. We are talking about a very stable material: neither cold, heat nor humidity alters it, so it keeps its colour and texture over time. The handle fills the hand nicely and includes a lanyard hole, in case you want to add a matching lanyard for extra grip.
The sheath
The sheath is cut and stitched in the Cudeman workshops in Albacete, in good-quality black leather with green stitching that rounds off the set. It is a multi-position design, so you can carry it in different ways with the edge always protected.
Who it is for
- Demanding collectors: with its innovative approach and the debut of Juma, it is a clear candidate to take pride of place in a modern display cabinet.
- Design lovers: perfect if you value the crossover between a classic factory and a leading designer like Opus Knives.
- Occasional field use: with that Bohler steel and its robustness, it more than holds its own in any outdoor task.
Care
- Wipe the blade with a soft cloth after use to remove fingerprints and greasy residue.
- Store it in a dry place: the steel and the Juma suffer little, but the leather of the sheath appreciates an environment without excess humidity.
- An occasional once-over with a microfibre cloth is enough to bring out the green of the Juma.
- Do not apply harsh chemicals to the handle, so as not to damage its scale pattern.
- After an outing in the field, dry the blade thoroughly before sheathing it to avoid condensation.
In short, the Kaiman (183-JV) marries the knifemaking craft of Albacete with a thoroughly contemporary outlook: a distinctive, sporty collector's piece for those who refuse to settle for the usual.
