Description

Cudeman Bushcraft 148-M: a woodland tool built to take a beating

The Cudeman Bushcraft 148-M is a fixed-blade knife aimed at those who live for the outdoors and survival disciplines. With its 11 cm blade and 4 mm thickness, this piece is dialled in for heavy use deep in the wild, serving as a reliable companion when you are building shelters, working logs or starting a fire as conditions turn against you.

Made by Cudeman in its workshops in Albacete, the model manages to pair comfortable handling with an exceptionally solid build. Its full tang construction and dedicated profile place it among the favourites for bushcraft, an activity where mechanical strength stops being a luxury and becomes essential.

Features that set it apart

  • Scandinavian (scandi) grind: the bevel runs straight down to the edge with no secondary bevel, something that makes carving and fine work on wood far simpler.
  • Top-tier steel: Bohler N-695 delivers remarkable edge retention along with strong resistance to corrosion, ideal for damp, wooded environments.
  • Two ways to carry it: it comes with two types of sheath, so you can choose the lightweight version or the complete survival kit for extended treks.
  • Secure handle anchoring: the scales are held by stainless steel Allen screws mounted on brass bushings, keeping the assembly firmly bonded to the steel body no matter what.

How the steel and the edge perform

The blade uses the renowned Bohler N-695 tempered to 59/60 HRc. Thanks to its scandi grind, the tool bites into wood naturally and allows precise cuts in woodcarving tasks, while comfortably handling the impacts of moderate batoning. The satin finish of the blade makes it easy to clean after a demanding day.

Build strength

This is a full tang knife with 4 mm thickness: the steel runs continuously through the entire piece, from the tip to the end of the handle. That approach gives it tremendous firmness for heavy-duty work. The tip, with a standard reinforced profile, withstands piercing tasks without losing integrity. It is a tool conceived to be with you for years, provided you respect its reasonable limits and do not force it as an extreme lever on non-organic materials.

Handle and grip in the field

The handle is made of satin black Micarta with red fibre spacers. Micarta has established itself as a go-to material in bushcraft for its high tolerance to impact, heat and moisture. Its shape has been worked to avoid pressure points that lead to blisters after prolonged use. The satin finish keeps a secure grip even when hands are wet from rain or coated in resin, and the lanyard hole adds that extra reassurance you want out in the bush.

Sheath and carry options

The sheath on the 148-M version is black leather with red stitching, practical and clean in its lines, and features pass-through eyelets that let you thread a cord or paracord all the way around the leather. The 148-MC variant goes for a multi-position sheath (horizontal or vertical carry) paired with the complete survival and bushcraft kit. Two configurations to match your carry to each outing:

  • 148-M: a functional, no-nonsense black leather sheath fitted with hollow rivets to run a cord or paracord through.
  • 148-MC: the complete leather set, adding the survival kit (sharpening stone, signalling mirror, fire steel and 2.8 metres of paracord).

What it is ideal for

  • Bushcraft: it excels at processing firewood, preparing stakes, cutting notches for traps or working with a fire steel.
  • Survival: an emergency tool capable of meeting building and defence needs out in the wild.
  • Multi-day treks: a sound choice as your primary knife when the reliability of your gear is everything.

Maintenance and care

  • It is best to clean and dry the blade after each use, especially if you have worked with resinous woods or wet materials.
  • As this is a scandi edge, remember that it does not behave like a conventional edge: it cuts extremely well but is a touch more delicate, so it calls for careful handling. To sharpen it, rest the entire machined flat against the stone and you will keep the original factory angle.
  • The black Micarta requires no special care; if it gets stained, plain water and mild soap are enough to restore its tone.
  • The leather of the sheath appreciates the occasional treatment with a dedicated product that keeps it supple and water-repellent.

More than just a knife, the Cudeman Bushcraft 148-M is that wood-eating companion with a cut that is hard to match. Available at Navajeria with shipping across mainland Spain.
