Cudeman Black Lion 177-P (Black Phosphate): the tactical knife with military origins
The Cudeman 177-P Black Lion is a fixed-blade tactical knife designed for combat and survival in extreme conditions. Its story began as an exclusive commission to equip the para-commando units of the Belgian army; after selling by the thousand and proving its reliability on the front line, it went on to be sold openly. Made by Cudeman in Albacete, it measures 28 centimetres in overall length and carries an aggressive profile conceived to perform when not the slightest failure is acceptable.
This is a full-tang piece, phosphate-finished and field-proven by elite units, with a presence that signals its character at first glance. The design aims for precise control, hard-hitting power and remarkable versatility for getting through all kinds of physical barriers.
Defining features
- Double-edged point: the sharpening on both sides of the point allows immediate penetration into hard materials and in defensive scenarios.
- Anti-glare finish: the black phosphate coating on the steel eliminates reflections, helping to avoid giving away your position during approaches and night work.
- Rescue tools: it integrates a wire cutter on the blade and a solid-steel striking pommel, useful for forcing a way through or breaking obstacles without compromising the main cutting edge.
- Secure grip: the injection-moulded handle keeps a stable hold and the lanyard hole lets you secure the knife to your wrist during airborne or waterborne operations.
Steel and edge performance
The blade measures 15 cm and is made from molybdenum vanadium steel, with a heat treatment that reaches a hardness of 54/56 HRc. This alloy is built for toughness, so the tool withstands twisting and heavy impacts without the edge chipping in use. The traditional grind, combined with the double-edged point, boosts its piercing and tearing power. The black phosphate coating also protects against corrosion in humid or salty environments and makes quick field re-sharpening easier.
Construction and durability
The Cudeman 177-P is built on a full-tang knife structure ready for the hardest use. A continuous steel thickness of 4.8 mm runs through the piece from the point to the rear striker, forming a compact block of 250 grams capable of meeting military demands. Its 3 cm wide blade stock delivers outstanding structural rigidity. Bear in mind that the double-edged point is optimised to pierce and cut: avoiding the use of the last few centimetres of the blade as an extreme pry bar will keep its cutting geometry intact for years.
Handle and control in real conditions
The grip is handled by a 13 cm handle in black rubber, injection-moulded directly and permanently onto the tang. This high-density tactical polymer resists temperature changes, hydrocarbons and moisture, and offers a very high-friction surface that dampens the vibrations of impacts. Its ergonomic shape locks the hand in place and reduces the risk of slipping from rain, mud or blood, keeping handling comfortable even with thick cut-resistant gloves.
Sheath and portability
The model comes with a rugged black Cordura sheath with a MOLLE system. It adds barely 130 grams and holds the knife firmly to prevent any noise while on the move, allowing a snug mount on a vest or belt and a fast, instinctive draw.
Use cases
- Special operations and combat: the double-edged point and anti-glare profile make it ideal as a primary intervention tool.
- Infiltration and rescue: the wire cutter and striking pommel are decisive for clearing fencing or breaking out through a vehicle's windows.
- Military survival: its full tang offers the solidity needed to prepare positions, cut straps and process resources in the field.
Care and maintenance
- After each use, clean the blade with a soft cloth to remove moisture, mud or salt and preserve the phosphate finish.
- Apply a thin coat of gun oil to the molybdenum vanadium steel before storing it, so any onset of surface rust is held back.
- Wash the black rubber handle with running water only; being an injection-moulded synthetic, it neither needs nor absorbs oils or creams.
- Empty and shake out the Cordura sheath frequently to expel sand or grit and prevent it from scratching the blade when sheathing.
- Touch up both edges with a diamond or ceramic stone, always keeping the factory cutting angles.
The Cudeman Black Lion (177-P) brings the real-world experience of military commandos into a tough, reliable tactical tool, built for the hardest service. Available at Navajeria with shipping across mainland Spain.
