Cudeman MT-1 295-K in Cocobolo: a survival legend with the soul of fine wood
Designed for those who head into the backcountry without giving up the warmth of traditional materials, the Cudeman MT-1 (295-K) brings together extreme toughness and handcrafted looks. This version takes the original model the brand launched in 2009 with Manuel de la Torre, the very knife that passed the abuse tests its critics threw at it, and swaps the tactical polymers for natural Cocobolo wood. The result keeps the same indestructible character that broke new ground in the most demanding survival cutlery, now with a dress finish.
Conceived for bushcraft and the outdoor life, it keeps all of its structural strength intact along with its ability to handle the hardest camp chores. It is proof that a piece with history and workshop beauty can take on the most brutal work without the slightest hesitation.
What sets this knife apart
- Toughness and tradition combined: a 5 mm thick blade that pairs proven reliability with the craftsmanship and look of genuine wood.
- Striking power: its 250 grams of weight and the pommel striker at the rear let you pound and hammer without the tool suffering.
- Secure grip under load: the machined jimping along the spine of the blade catches the thumb and stops the hand from slipping when carving or pressing.
Steel and edge performance
The model's technical maturity culminates in the remarkable Böhler N-695 steel, with a heat treatment that sets a hardness of 59/60 HRc. That alloy offers outstanding edge retention for working wood over long stretches without the cut degrading. The blade profile, hollow-ground with a satin finish, favours deep, clean cuts. As this is a hard steel, it is worth carrying a diamond sharpener in your pack to bring back its original bite in the field.
Construction and durability
Having once endured almost absurd extreme testing, its behaviour in the field is beyond doubt. The construction is full tang: a single solid block of steel, with 11 centimetres of blade and 3 centimetres of grip, runs through and supports the whole assembly. The scales are anchored to the chassis with internal threaded brass bushings and good-gauge stainless Allen hardware. The Clip-Point tip pierces and bites well into wood, though common sense recommends using it as a cutting tool and not as a wedge to split rock or force metal.
Handle and real control
After hours of use fatigue takes its toll, and here the scales turned from satin Cocobolo wood make the difference: a dense, warm-to-the-touch and ergonomic material that absorbs some of the vibration when batoning and settles naturally into the palm. For added safety, the handle ends in a lanyard hole, so the blade will not slip from your hand through carelessness. The piece also features holes in the blade and at the base of the handle, designed to lash it firmly to a pole and turn it into a spear.
Sheath and carry
A tool of this calibre calls for versatile, secure carry. The sheaths in this series are made from premium brown leather, cut and stitched by Cudeman's own craftsmen as part of their handcrafted manufacturing philosophy. The purist wood version forgoes Kydex and offers two configurations:
- 295-K: a multi-position brown leather sheath, understated and elegant, ready for the belt in vertical or horizontal carry.
- 295-KC: the complete set, with a multi-position brown leather sheath plus a front adapter that adds a sharpening stone, signal mirror, fire steel and coyote-coloured 550 paracord, for a complete survival kit.
Common uses
- Classic bushcraft and shelter building, processing firewood with survival techniques.
- General camp tasks, from lighting a fire to carving wooden tools.
- Wilderness survival situations where the strength of the tool makes the difference.
Care and maintenance
- Remove resin, sap and dirt from the satin blade with warm water and soap after working wood, so no permanent stains are left behind.
- Dry the whole knife thoroughly before storing it; moisture is the worst enemy of any outdoor gear.
- As it is a fine, dense wood, the Cocobolo appreciates an occasional thin coat of linseed oil to feed the grain. Always store it in a dry place and never expose it to moisture.
- Periodically check the tightness of the Allen screws if you subject it to continuous impacts and vibration.
- Take the knife out of the leather sheath if you will be weeks without going out, preventing condensation held by the tanning from affecting the metal.
The Cudeman MT-1 295-K brings together the strength of a proven classic with the lasting character of exotic wood. A tool born in the workshops of Albacete to accompany many years of adventure. Available at Navajeria with shipping across mainland Spain.
