Cudeman Boina Verde Espanol (299-B): the tactical benchmark forged through controversy
Launched in 2010, this tactical and military model was born in Cudeman's workshops in Albacete, taking the lines of the classic Argentine Yarara as its starting point. Building on that inspiration, the maker reworked the ergonomics and refined the geometry to achieve a high-end semi-handcrafted production, giving life to the Boina Verde Espanol. Its profile is recognised worldwide today, a piece so sought after that its prestige has been cemented by surviving brutally demanding operational duty, despite the criticism and campaigns of those who tried to claim its legacy as their own.
More than an 18 cm blade, this is a true portable rescue and combat station designed for the professional who ventures into hostile terrain. Its sheer presence, its mass and its cutting and impact power have made it a flagship piece of the brand, proof that manufacturing rigour makes the difference when survival is on the line.
Reasons to choose this model
- Manageable impact power: with 420 grams biased toward a wide blade, it lets you work hardwood or clear a path by harnessing inertia and saving effort with every strike.
- Built-in emergency tools: it combines a wire cutter, a bullet capsule and a glass-breaker striker, covering several critical needs without switching tools.
- Secure thumb grip: the machined jimping along the spine locks the thumb in place safely and gives total control when applying directed force or working at close range.
Steel and edge performance
To withstand the harshest climates it runs Bohler N-695 steel, taken through a very precise heat treatment to a hardness of 59/60 HRc. That tuning gives it remarkable edge retention and good protection against corrosion in humid or salty environments. The blade grind, together with a careful satin finish, favours deep, clean cuts. Given its high hardness, it is wise to always carry a diamond or ceramic stone in your kit to restore the edge during an extended outing.
Build and durability
The construction is fully full tang: it starts from a robust steel plate 5 millimetres thick and 4.5 centimetres wide at the blade, running the full 31 centimetres of the piece. The scales are fixed to the chassis with thick stainless steel Allen screws and internal threaded brass bushings. The Clip-Point tip penetrates with enormous efficiency; even so, given its hollow-ground profile it shines as a cutting and impact tool and should not be used as a lever to pry out stones.
Handle and grip in real use
Under pressure, grip is everything. The handle is clad in solid satin black Micarta scales, set off by a striking red spacer. As an artificial laminate that is indifferent to water, blood or mud, Micarta keeps its grip even with soaked gloves. The assembly ends in the rear glass-breaker, which features a hole for a lanyard so the tool stays secured to the user during the most challenging extractions.
Sheath and carry
A piece of this size calls for a versatile, hard-wearing carry system. The Boina Verde Espanol ships with a solid multi-position black leather sheath shaped to its silhouette. These sheaths are made in-house by Cudeman, designed, cut and assembled by hand by its craftsmen in Albacete. Depending on the level of demand, the model accepts three sheath configurations:
- 299-B: multi-position black leather sheath, simple, classic and tough, suitable for horizontal or vertical carry.
- 299-BC: full black leather sheath with survival kit (sharpening stone, signalling mirror, flint and quality red paracord).
- 299-B-K: black Kydex sheath, geared to purely tactical or very humid environments, with firm mechanical retention and very fast draw.
Intended uses
- Military operations and tactical deployments where a heavy tool is needed to clear a path and work the surroundings.
- Emergency rescue work, making the most of its ability to break vehicle glass and cut wire.
- Demanding survival and extreme bushcraft, taking on axe-like tasks when felling and processing thick firewood.
Care and maintenance
- Clean and disinfect the blade with soap and water after each intensive use, removing chemical or biological residue to preserve the satin finish.
- Thoroughly dry the Bohler N-695 steel before storing it in the leather, especially after working in the jungle or near the sea.
- The Micarta scales need no oil, wax or conditioning; simply go over them with a damp brush.
- Regularly check the tightness of the Allen hardware before each outing so the assembly stays firm after prolonged use.
- Respect the original grind angle when sharpening and use diamond tools to avoid uneven wear on the blade.
The Cudeman Boina Verde Espanol (299-B) stands for the heft of Spanish manufacturing. Available at Navajeria with shipping across mainland Spain.
