Description

Cudeman Boina Verde Espanol black-coated (299-N): the tactical icon that vanishes into the shadows

The Boina Verde Espanol (299-N) represents the pinnacle of Cudeman's military range, now dressed in a dark, aggressive black coating. Its lineage traces back to the classic Argentine Yarara: in the workshops of Albacete, Cudeman reinterpreted and refined that geometry to shape a semi-handcrafted piece that left its mark on its era. This is a tactical knife built for the operator who needs to stay unnoticed and, at the same time, strike with authority. More than a simple 18-centimetre blade, it is an assault and rescue platform designed to reflect neither sunlight nor the glare of tactical lights.

Reasons to choose this model

  • Visual discretion and extra defence: the black coating eliminates tell-tale reflections during night-time manoeuvres and adds a further layer of protection against environmental corrosion.
  • Mass that works in your favour: its 420 grams, spread across a blade 4.5 centimetres wide, drive every blow when chopping or clearing a path, without tiring the user prematurely.
  • Integrated emergency tooling: it features a wire breaker, a bullet capsuler and a sturdy glass breaker, solving critical situations without having to let go of the tool.

Steel and cutting performance

The heart of this piece is the demanding Bohler N-695 steel, which after Cudeman's heat treatment settles around 59/60 HRc. That alloy delivers remarkable tactical hardness alongside top-tier edge retention. The grind profile slices through materials with ease, while the dark coating seals the surface of the metal. As this is a high-hardness steel, the most practical approach is to carry diamond sharpeners in your field kit to restore the original edge in a matter of minutes.

Construction and durability

Ruggedness is the hallmark of this knife. Its construction is fully full tang: a single block of Bohler steel 5 millimetres thick runs the full 31 centimetres of the tool's overall length. The scales are fixed to the chassis with stainless-steel Allen screws and thick internal threaded brass bushings. The imposing clip-point tip is devastating on penetration, though it is worth remembering that its design is optimised for cutting, slicing and impact, not for prying against blocks of stone. It is common and technically normal that, with use and friction, a black-coated knife reveals the silver tone of the base steel: this is a characteristic of this type of finish.

Handle and control in real conditions

A tool of this size calls for a firm grip. That is why it mounts tough scales of satin-finished black Micarta, accented with a striking red spacer. Micarta is a military-grade material that sheds blood, water and mud, so the grip stays stable even with soaked tactical gloves. To improve traction, the spine features pronounced jimping that seats the thumb, and the assembly ends in a solid glass breaker with a lanyard hole, preventing accidental loss during manoeuvres.

Sheath and carry

The Boina Verde Espanol comes with a multi-position black leather sheath that mirrors the silhouette of the knife. Cudeman's sheaths are made in-house, designed, cut and assembled by hand by their craftsmen in Albacete. Depending on the level of tactical demand, this model accepts three sheath configurations:

  • 299-N: multi-position black leather sheath, classic and durable, suitable for horizontal or vertical carry.
  • 299-NC: full black leather sheath with survival kit, including sharpening stone, signal mirror, fire steel and quality red paracord.
  • 299-N-K: black Kydex sheath, ideal for purely tactical or high-humidity environments, with firm mechanical retention and very fast draw.

Use scenarios

  • Military deployments and special operations where stealth, striking power and camouflage are decisive.
  • Rescues in collapsed structures or vehicles, taking advantage of the integrated glass breaker and wire cutter.
  • Demanding survival and extreme bushcraft in hostile environments, including chopping and processing thick wood.

Care and maintenance

  • Wash the blade thoroughly with soap and water after each use; removing fluids or resin extends the life of the black coating.
  • Dry the Bohler N-695 steel completely before storing, paying special attention to the bullet capsuler and the wire breaker.
  • The black Micarta needs no oils or moisturisers; a quick brushing is enough to restore its grippy feel.
  • Periodically check the tightness of the Allen screws if the tool has endured intense vibration while chopping hard wood.
  • Always sharpen at the original grind angle, with diamond tools, taking care not to scratch the dark coating on the sides.

The Cudeman Boina Verde Espanol (299-N), known as El Boina, is one of the tactical icons of the Albacete brand: a piece made in Spain that masters the darkness. Available at Navajeria with shipping across mainland Spain.
