Description

Cudeman 178-N black-coated throwing knife: ballistic precision for sport throwing

The Cudeman 178-N throwing knife is built for those who practise knife throwing methodically, where hitting the target depends on training and the right gear rather than on luck. Its dark finish gives it a markedly tactical character and cuts down the glare that can break your concentration outdoors. This is a long-standing model, with more than 25 years on the market, and its 25.5 cm overall length delivers consistent balance so that every rotation in the air repeats the behaviour of the last.

What makes this thrower special

  • Adjustable balance: the twin-counterweight system lets you shift the balance point forward or back, fine-tuning the knife to each thrower's release style and to the distance of the target.
  • Quick adjustment in the field: the included Allen key lets you move or lock the weights mid-session in a matter of seconds.
  • No distracting reflections: the black coating kills any glint on outdoor throwing ranges, helping you keep a fixed, relaxed focus on the target.
  • Solid sticking: its 4 cm blade width and penetrating thrower point open up the wood fibres and reduce bounce-backs.

Steel and point behaviour

In throwing, a steel that is too hard turns brittle, which is why this model uses 420 steel hardened to 52/53 HRc. That heat treatment gives it remarkable toughness, able to absorb the heavy impact of kinetic energy against wood without snapping. The profile grind favours a deep entry, while the black coating adds a protective and aesthetic layer. It is worth clarifying that the piece has no cutting edge, but it does have a forceful point.

Construction and durability

The body is a single full-tang block designed to withstand demanding use. The 3.8 mm blade thickness provides the structural strength that the mechanical fatigue of thousands of throws demands. As a sport instrument calibrated specifically to fly and impact, it should not be used to cut branches, process wood or pry; sticking to its ballistic function is what preserves its aerodynamic profile over time.

Handle and control

The grip area is a smooth extension of the black-coated steel itself, with no bolted scales that could splinter or work loose under impact. This stripped-back design lets the piece leave the hand cleanly and without snagging, whether you hold it by the handle or throw it by pinching the blade. It is in this central body that the twin counterweight alters the dynamic behaviour according to the technique used.

Sheath and carry

The set comes with a black leather sheath weighing just 50 grams, made by Cudeman in their leatherworking workshops in Albacete. It is marked out, cut and stitched to measure to hold the thrower completely still. It features a belt loop that makes it easy to carry and protects the dark finish from rubbing against the rest of your kit. Alongside the sheath you also get the Allen key for adjusting the counterweights for each throw.

Use scenarios

  • Tactical training: the anti-glare profile makes it suitable for throwing sessions with a sober, low-key look.
  • Sport competition: the configurable weight gives you an edge by adapting the drop and flight to the various distances in the rules.
  • Instinctive throwing: the clean silhouette makes it easy to alternate between spin throwing and no-spin techniques.

Care and maintenance

  • Retighten the twin counterweight with the Allen key periodically, since the repeated vibrations of impacts tend to loosen the hardware.
  • Check the bevels at the end of each session; if the piece has clashed with another in the air or on the target, gently file down any metal burr to avoid cutting your fingers.
  • Remove sap or splinters from the blade by wiping it with a dry cloth, because clinging resin hampers the clean release of the metal.
  • Run a thin coat of gun oil over the steel before storing it to nourish the pores of the coating and hold off moisture.
  • Store the leather sheath away from strong heat sources, such as the sun in a car or a radiator, so the material keeps its flexibility.

In short, the Cudeman 178-N throwing knife is an adjustable, carefully measured sport tool, designed to support the thrower's progress and to make every throw reflect their aim. Available at Navajeria with shipping across mainland Spain.
