Description

Cudeman Akeley 254-C: a hunting knife with stag antler scales and African heritage

The name pays tribute to Carl Akeley, an explorer and conservationist who raised hunting to the level of a scientific discipline and who is said to have killed a leopard with his bare hands after a surprise attack. Inspired by that spirit of tenacity, the Cudeman Akeley (254-C) brings the lines of the classic Loveless style to one of the most exclusive pieces in the Cudeman catalogue, where a mirror polish meets remarkable cutting power. It is a knife designed for the hunter who wants distinction without giving up performance.

Its display-case finish should not be misleading: this is a high-performance tool, made by Cudeman in Albacete to deliver in the field. The full-grind blade and the distinctive three-point hardware give it a signature look on the hunt, proof that tradition, elegance and efficiency can live together on your belt.

What sets this piece apart

  • Precise game cutting: the 10 cm blade with a full-grind profile allows clean, meticulous work with no effort.
  • A piece with heritage: the unmistakable design and hand finishes turn it into an object of pride, fit to be passed down through generations.
  • Hand protection: it features a polished A-304 stainless steel bolster that acts as a natural guard and keeps the fingers away from the edge during fieldwork.

Steel and edge

True to its class, the blade is forged in Bohler N690Co steel with a heat treatment that reaches a hardness of 60/61 HRc. This top-tier alloy delivers outstanding edge retention, enough to process a whole animal with no pauses for resharpening. Its good corrosion resistance is decisive against blood and fluids, although resharpening at home calls for diamond or ceramic stones to bring back its original bite.

Construction and durability

Refinement does not undermine its strength. It has a full-tang construction with a 4.5 mm thickness, a firm foundation for its 190 grams of weight. The assembly relies on internal threaded brass bushings and special stainless steel hardware. It is a solid block conceived for sustained cutting, although its sharp drop-point tip advises prudent use as a cutting tool, without prying on joints or thick bones.

Handle and ergonomics

Contact with the tool comes through scales of selected polished stag antler, mounted over a discreet red spacer that outlines its silhouette. This natural material shows off a classic look that is hard to match and sits with great ergonomics in the palm, reducing fatigue during dressing. The flare towards the pommel, together with the lanyard hole, ensures a firm, well-oriented grip in any manoeuvre.

Sheath and carry

A piece of this calibre demands the best protection. That is why the Akeley includes a very high quality brown leather sheath, made entirely by hand. Its classic pistolero cut offers deep, secure retention, ideal for quiet, discreet belt carry while you roam the hills.

Use cases

  • Agile skinning and careful dressing of big-game animals.
  • Processing meat and fine cuts at base camp.
  • A prestige primary tool on big-game hunts and classic cutting expeditions.
  • A showpiece for the display case of the most demanding hunter.

Care and maintenance

  • Remove organic residue from the blade right after use to keep the hand-applied mirror polish intact.
  • The selected polished stag antler scales require care: keep the piece in a dry place and never wet this natural material, which could deteriorate or change its dimensions.
  • Always use a soft microfibre cloth on the bolster and the steel so you do not scratch its delicate surface.
  • Maintain the edge angle with leather strops or very fine-grit ceramics, removing the least amount of steel on each pass.

The Cudeman Akeley (254-C) goes beyond the idea of a simple knife: it is a statement of character, a diamond on your belt and a superb tool created to honour the demanding hunter. Available at Navajeria with shipping across mainland Spain.
