Description

Cudeman Pyrana (184-JA): radical ergonomics and mould-breaking looks

The Cudeman Pyrana was conceived as the counterpoint to the Kaiman model, the two together forming one of the boldest pairings in the brand's most cutting-edge catalogue. Launched in 2024, it stems from a fresh collaboration with Opus Knives, a firm with whom visual daring meets ergonomics pushed to the extreme. The name itself evokes the speed and voracity of a water-dwelling predator, an idea that translates into a piece of compact size yet commanding presence.

Its disruptive lines place it straight away among must-have collector's pieces, even though it remains a working tool with a clearly defined purpose. The full-tang blade and an unconventional handle geometry are designed to surprise you with how well they sit in the palm. This is a knife that breaks from the norm, made entirely in Albacete by Cudeman and designed by Charles of Opus Knives, for anyone who pursues technical excellence in a compact format.

What sets it apart

  • Built for skinning: the profile of the tip combined with a generously wide blade make it a precise skinner, designed for field work where cutting control is paramount.
  • Next-generation materials: it features blue Juma with orange spacers, a synthetic that reproduces natural textures with extremely high resistance and a striking visual pattern.
  • A well-resolved grip: despite its initially "unusual" look, the handle settles naturally into the hand and encourages a firm hold that reduces fatigue during repetitive tasks.
  • Secure thumb support: the jimping carved into the spine stops the finger from slipping and lets you bring the full 5 mm thickness of the steel to bear with almost surgical control.

Steel and edge performance

The blade is machined from premium Bohler N-695 steel, hardened to 59/60 HRc. This is a high-end steel that offers notable edge retention, a key requirement in a piece geared towards skinning, where friction is constant. The flat grind and satin finish, beyond adding character, help the blade glide cleanly through tissue and keep its working capacity day after day.

Build and robustness

We are looking at a "little giant" whose spine reaches 5 mm in thickness. The full-tang construction gives it structural solidity well beyond the reach of other knives of similar dimensions. The handle is secured with flat aluminium rivets that permanently hold the blue Juma in place, while the orange spacers add a vivid splash of colour that underlines its sporty, contemporary feel.

Handle and real-world handling

The blue Juma handle with orange spacers is, without question, the most recognisable feature of the piece. Juma is unaffected by sweat, moisture or temperature changes, and keeps its feel and shine intact. The handle design lets you move the knife with complete freedom and includes a lanyard hole for anyone who wants to add a custom cord that makes drawing easier or adds extra security during handling.

Sheath and carry

As with the rest of Cudeman's high-end pieces, the Pyrana comes with a top-quality black leather sheath finished with blue stitching, in keeping with the tone of the handle. At just 40 grams, it is highly discreet and firm: it protects the knife effectively without adding bulk to your kit. It is the ideal companion for a tool that shines as much for what it does as for its looks.

Which uses it suits

  • Design collection: an essential addition for anyone who appreciates exclusive collaborations and novel materials such as Juma.
  • Big and small game hunting: the skinning-tip profile makes it a first-rate technical tool when it comes to processing game in the field.
  • High-end EDC: its compact format and great resistance make it ideal for everyday carry when you want maximum quality in minimal space.

Care and maintenance

  • As this is blue Juma, restoring the handle's lustre is as simple as wiping it with a microfibre cloth.
  • Wash the blade with water and a mild soap after each use, especially when it has been in contact with organic fluids during skinning.
  • Dry it thoroughly before returning it to the sheath so that moisture does not end up affecting the Bohler steel over time.
  • Keep the set in a dry place, away from prolonged direct sunlight, so the colours of the handle and spacers stay vivid.
  • Touch up the edge with leather strops or very fine-grit stones so as not to alter the technical geometry of the tip.

The Cudeman Pyrana (184-JA) distils sporty character and avant-garde design into a single knife: an atypical proposition for a light, compact and decisive tool, made in Albacete for anyone who understands where knifemaking is heading. Available at Navajeria with shipping across mainland Spain.
