Description

Cudeman Alaska Olive Wood (161-L): the field-dressing duo built for the demanding hunter

More than a single knife, the Cudeman Alaska is a complete cutting set that brings two complementary pieces together inside one sheath. It is designed for the hunter who knows the day does not end with the shot, but with a job well done in the field. This two-in-one combination saves space in your kit and lets you tackle both heavy-duty tasks and fine detail work efficiently, right out on the ground.

The set comprises the rugged Alaska machete (163-L), geared towards powerful cutting and splitting, alongside the slim Mini Alaska boning knife (165-L), a precision tool for the more delicate manoeuvres. Both pieces are built with full tang construction, so the balance and solidity of the set remain intact even after intensive, prolonged use over time.

What makes this set special

  • Dual function: a high-inertia machete for chopping and separating bone and a compact knife for trimming and boning, both always within reach.
  • Built for hunting: designed to process meat in the field or at home with a dedicated tool for each task.
  • Fine woods: the satin-finished natural olive wood scales offer an organic grip and a look that gains character over the years, true to traditional Spanish knifemaking.
  • Discreet carry: the double sheath keeps both pieces secure and compact, rattle-free and with quick access to either blade.

Steel and edge

Both the machete and the boning knife are forged in molybdenum vanadium steel hardened to 54/56 HRc. It is an alloy highly valued in butchery and field tools for its toughness and notable corrosion resistance. The hollow grind on both blades favours outstanding penetration and an edge that stays working through long sessions; restoring the cutting edge after a hard day is also very straightforward.

Construction and durability

The Alaska machete has a thickness of 4.5 mm and a blade 5 cm wide, giving it remarkable striking force. The Mini Alaska boning knife, by contrast, carries a slimmer 2.8 mm blade that can slip between joints with hardly any resistance. Both pieces are assembled with flat aluminium rivets, which fix the natural olive wood to the steel body and eliminate any play under load.

Handle and ergonomics

The satin-finished natural olive wood on both handles goes beyond aesthetics. Thanks to its density, this wood offers a firm hold even with a wet hand. The shape of the machete makes it easy to fully control the impact, while the Mini Alaska handle is worked with the fingertips to achieve the finesse that avoids wasting meat.

Sheath and portability

The kangaroo-style sheath of the Alaska is a piece of craftsmanship in its own right, designed and made entirely in the workshops Cudeman runs in Albacete. Crafted from premium brown leather, it features independent compartments for each tool, so they do not rub against one another and the edges stay protected from ambient moisture. It is a firm, durable sheath that keeps your field-dressing kit organised and ready for action.

Use cases

  • Field dressing: the ideal pair for breaking down the animal and making it easy to carry out straight away.
  • Processing at home: tools well suited to preparing game carcasses or farm meat with a professional finish.
  • Rustic cooking and grilling: an enviable kit for outdoor cooking enthusiasts who want power and precision in equal measure.

Care and maintenance

  • Since the scales are natural olive wood, store the set in a dry place and avoid wetting the wood more than strictly necessary.
  • Wash and carefully dry both blades after every use, especially after contact with organic fluids.
  • To enhance the wood, occasionally apply a drop of camellia oil or fine-wood wax.
  • Do not place the pieces back in the sheath while the leather is still damp; let it air-dry naturally before housing the steel.
  • Sharpen each tool while respecting its original hollow grind to preserve the cutting efficiency that defines this set.

The Cudeman Kangaroo Alaska (161-L) represents the living heritage of knives made for hunters: a reliable, rugged set, made in Spain for those who will not settle for mediocre tools at the decisive moment. Available at Navajeria with shipping across mainland Spain.
