Description

Cudeman MT-1 (295-M): the survival icon with black Micarta scales

The MT-1 (295-M) first appeared in 2009, born from a collaboration between Cudeman and Spanish knife enthusiast Manuel de la Torre. It was the first pure-survival model from the Albacete maker and the knife that opened up a whole new category within its catalogue. Over the years the piece has matured: today it debuts Bohler N-695 steel and more refined sheaths, yet its essence remains untouched. Its classic black Micarta handle, finished with the unmistakable red spacers, has made it an undisputed reference for the field.

Its reputation for toughness is no empty slogan. Shortly after its launch, two critics set out to discredit the knife's design and build by subjecting it to an excessive test: driving it in and prying against a sheet-metal door to bend or break it. The attempt failed. The MT-1 withstood the punishment without the slightest deformation, proving it to be a genuine tank capable of handling almost any demand on the belt.

Reasons why this Cudeman delivers

  • Proven strength: having survived such extreme abuse is a guarantee that, in a real emergency, the tool will never be the weak link in your kit.
  • Structural versatility: with a thickness of 5 millimetres and an 11-centimetre blade, it carries enough mass for chopping and working firewood without sacrificing a format that stays manageable around camp.
  • Command of the grip: the pronounced jimping on the spine locks the thumb firmly in place and lets you direct force in a precise, controlled way.

Steel and cutting-edge behaviour

The current version is built around Bohler N-695 steel with a carefully executed heat treatment that reaches a hardness of 59/60 HRc. This high-performance alloy offers notable edge retention and excellent protection against corrosion. The profile grind, combined with the satin finish, gives a deep bite when carving and cutting; that said, given its high hardness it is wise to pack a diamond sharpener to revive the edge in the field.

Construction and solidity

The key to its near-indestructibility lies in the full-tang format: a continuous block of steel 5 millimetres thick with a 3-centimetre blade width that concentrates its 250 grams into an unusual heft. The scales are secured to the chassis with internal threaded brass bushings and thick stainless steel Allen screws. Despite its proven strength, it is worth remembering that the aggressive Clip-Point tip is designed to penetrate and pierce: the sensible approach is to use it as a survival tool and not as an industrial pry bar. It is a knife, not a demolition instrument.

Handle and control in real conditions

Hostile environments demand a grip that never fails. The MT-1 led the way with robust satin black Micarta scales, now highlighted by a vivid red spacer. Micarta is an industrial-grade synthetic composite that does not swell or rot and keeps a reliable friction even when the hands are caked in mud, rain or sweat. To reinforce its extreme character it features a solid striking pommel at the rear, useful for breaking glass or hammering, along with the lanyard hole for a cord. The model also has holes in the blade and at the end of the handle, designed to lash it firmly to a thin pole and improvise a spear.

Sheath and portability

Carrying a survival knife should suit each mission. Cudeman makes its sheaths entirely in its Albacete workshops, with a finish worthy of the knife itself. Three configurations are available:

  • 295-M: multi-position black leather sheath with eye-catching red stitching. Well crafted, comfortable to carry and straightforward.
  • 295-MC: the most complete option. A multi-position black leather sheath with red stitching, paired with a front leather adapter equipped with a sharpening stone, signalling mirror, flint and red 550 paracord.
  • 295-M-K: a custom-moulded Kydex sheath with a more tactical profile, waterproof and very fast to draw.

Recommended uses

  • Preparing wood to light fires and build shelters.
  • Bushcraft and extreme survival, making the most of the striking pommel for impact tasks.
  • A tactical and rescue companion in difficult terrain, where the reliability of the material proves decisive.

Care and maintenance

  • Clean the blade with soap and water to remove resin and sap, which tend to cling to the satin finish.
  • Dry the Bohler N-695 steel thoroughly before storing it, especially after use in the rain or in very humid environments.
  • The Micarta scales need almost no attention: forget about oils or waxes, a quick brush is enough to leave them as good as new.
  • If you often use it to strike wood, check the tightness of the Allen screws from time to time to keep the assembly firm.
  • With the leather versions, store the knife outside the sheath during long periods of inactivity to avoid condensation.

The Cudeman MT-1 (295-M) is the piece that silenced its critics and helped define modern survival. Available at Navajeria with shipping across mainland Spain.
