Cudeman Nordic 138-DP: curly birch knife with mirror polish
The Cudeman Nordic (reference 138-DP) is an outdoor and hunting knife that carries on the legacy of the third exclusive project Cudeman developed for the Spanish edged-weapons forum Foro Armas Blancas, known as FAB III. That earlier edition with leather spacers left a memory hard to match, and this renewed version answers the demand by combining a traditional Scandinavian character with mechanical adjustments of millimetric precision. It is designed for anyone seeking warmth, cutting control and a piece that stands apart from anything industrial.
It weighs around 150 grams and features a mirror-polished finish that instantly evokes the spirit of the outdoors. This is a tool aimed at the most demanding enthusiasts of sporting cutlery, capable of serving as a fine working instrument and, at the same time, as a collector's piece.
Defining features
- Gap-free assembly: the A-304 stainless steel bolsters are CNC-machined, so the whole knife fits together precisely and leaves no gaps where dirt can build up.
- Clean, precise cutting: the 10 cm flat-grind blade glides through wood and food with great smoothness, making it easy to stay in control during detailed tasks.
- Light handling: at roughly 150 grams it becomes a nimble companion that won't tire you out over long days in the field.
- Exclusive finish: the hand-worked wood and the mirror-polished blade result in a collector's piece that is perfectly suited to real use in the field.
Steel and edge performance
The blade is made from Austrian Bohler N-695 steel with a hardness of 59/60 HRc. This high-end alloy offers excellent edge retention, enough to withstand long carving or dressing sessions. The mirror polish is not merely decorative: being a very smooth surface, it reinforces the steel's natural corrosion resistance. To bring back an edge of this hardness it is best to use diamond stones or fine ceramics, which restore the cutting edge without damaging the blade's polish.
Construction and strength
Unlike the classic hidden-tang models, the Nordic features a threaded full tang: the steel runs the full length of the handle and is fixed into the end bolster by means of a solid steel threaded inner sleeve. This internal solution provides remarkable structural strength, though it does not make the knife suitable for batoning. It is worth remembering that this is an outdoor knife with a flat grind; it is not designed for extreme prying or for the batoning technique, practices that can cause breakage not covered by the warranty as they are considered misuse. A Formula 1 single-seater is not designed to run a rally in Finland either.
Handle and control in use
The handle is a piece of craftsmanship made from a solid block of Finnish curly birch, shaped and polished entirely by hand and interspersed with two black leather washers on which the bolsters rest, also hand-polished. This Nordic wood is warm and pleasant to the touch, conforms to the shape of the hand and provides a firm grip with no uncomfortable friction points. The arrangement of the bolsters balances the weight towards the centre and gives it remarkable agility.
Sheath and carry
Carrying is entrusted to a Spanish-made brown leather sheath in a holster-style format. The knife sits very deep and is almost completely protected, which ensures very good friction retention and silent carry, ideal for moving discreetly through the countryside.
What it is suited for
- Traditional outdoor work and carving: the flat grind and ergonomic handle let you work wood with the precision characteristic of the Scandinavian style.
- Hunting and light dressing: the very clean, sharp N-695 steel is well suited to careful field dressing and to preparing food at camp.
- Active collecting: a piece with history and luxury finishes, fit both for the display cabinet and for use out in nature.
Care and maintenance
- Caring for the curly birch: as it is a porous natural wood fitted with leather washers, store the knife somewhere thoroughly dry. Avoid getting the handle wet so the materials do not swell and the precision fit of the CNC machining is not affected.
- Cleaning the polished steel: wash the blade with soap and water using only the soft side of the scourer or a microfibre cloth, and dry it straight away so as not to scratch the mirror finish.
- Checking the assembly: inspect the lanyard pin and keep the area around the bolsters free of sand or abrasive particles.
- Caring for the sheath: from time to time apply horse grease to the holster-style sheath to keep the outer leather supple and protected against the elements.
The Cudeman Nordic (138-DP) brings together the tradition of Spanish cutlery and the soul of the forests of northern Europe. Available at Navajeria with shipping across mainland Spain.
