Cudeman Galatea (325-L): traditional knifemaking at the service of the hunter
Designed for those who head into the field and demand dependable performance when dressing game, the Cudeman Galatea hunting folding knife is made by Cudeman in Albacete. It brings together the nobility of time-honoured materials with the performance of modern knifemaking, giving the hunter a precise, manageable tool to process game in the field with full confidence. Its ergonomics are designed so the knife feels like an extension of the hand.
Defining features
- Versatile drop-point blade: the generous belly favours sweeping cuts and skinning tasks, while the tip keeps the strength needed to pierce without fear of breakage.
- Reliable back-lock: the back-lock closing mechanism holds the blade firmly in place and prevents accidental closing while you work.
- Lanyard pin: set at the rear, it accepts a lanyard to keep the knife secure and avoid losing it in the undergrowth.
Steel and edge performance
Edge retention defines the character of any hunting folding knife, and here the Galatea delivers. The blade, with a satin finish, is built from the proven Bohler N690Co stainless steel, whose heat treatment reaches a professional hardness of 60/61 HRc. The result is prolonged cutting through hide and meat with little need for resharpening, along with notable corrosion resistance. Because of this high hardness, the recommended way to restore the bite in camp is to use diamond plates or a professional sharpener.
Construction and durability
The structure rests on a solid brass pin anchoring. With a blade thickness of 2.7 mm and a contained weight of just 135 grams, the knife is agile without sacrificing firmness, ideal for cutting and general field-dressing work. Use it sensibly: like any folding knife, it should not be subjected to extreme prying on bones or very hard joints.
Handle and control in real conditions
The cold of dawn and the damp of the field call for a grip that will not fail. The scales are crafted in natural satin-finished olive wood, a timber with unique grain that adds a warm, pleasant feel. Its anatomical profile fits the palm, reduces fatigue and lets you apply force comfortably even when your hands are soiled while processing the animal.
Versions and portability
The Galatea is offered in two references:
- 325-L: the sheathless option, intended for those who prefer to carry it loose in the pocket.
- 325-LF: the reference that adds a premium brown leather sheath (603-C) made by Cudeman in Albacete.
Use cases
- Skinning: the drop-point blade separates the hide with long, controlled strokes without damaging the meat.
- Field dressing and initial cleaning: firm, deep cuts to gut and prepare freshly taken game out in the field.
- The hunters' picnic board: an elegant, hygienic piece for slicing cured meats during a meal out in the field.
Care and maintenance
- Clean the knife by hand after each outing, removing organic fluids and dirt from the pivot and the lock.
- Dry the whole knife thoroughly with a cotton cloth to prevent moisture from condensing inside the liners.
- Apply a tiny drop of gun or fine-machinery oil to the pivot, so that opening and the back-lock stay smooth and quick.
- As it carries natural olive wood scales, it is worth nourishing the wood now and then with a very light coat of natural oil (linseed or olive) to protect the grain against temperature changes and bring out the figure.
- Maintain the edge with regular passes on a strop, preventing it from losing geometry and forcing a remedial abrasive sharpening.
The Cudeman Galatea (325-L) combines capable steel with the knifemaking tradition of Albacete, a companion built not to fail in the field. Available at Navajeria with shipping across mainland Spain.
